Josie Marcus takes her job as a mystery shopper very seriously. Despite being a single mom dependent on her mother Jane for childcare, she relishes being financially independent. With each new assignment, she discovers unusual niches in her beloved hometown of St. Louis. Her latest task is a culinary feast of sorts, tasting the finer gastronomic delicacies of her city. With many unusual dishes in line for her plate, Josie starts to worry if her everyday palate is up to the extraordinary challenge.
Along the way Josie stops by Tillie’s, owned by her mother’s old friend, to dine on some scrumptious toasted ravioli. What starts out as a sampling of mouth-watering pasta turns into the murder of one of Tillie’s long-time, yet annoying, customers. With Josie on the case, her mom is convinced that only she can save Tillie from going to prison. With the help of her boyfriend Ted, it’s up to Josie to bring the killer to justice or risk the wrath of Jane.
